In communications, a link protocol is a method and specification for transmission of data from one node on a local network or network link to another node on the same link. Link protocols are commonly categorized according to the Data Link Layer (Layer 2) specification of the OSI model or placed into the more general group of Link Layer protocols of the Internet Protocol Suite.
