Novelist Lisa Alther graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in English literature in 1966. She worked for a while at a publishing house in New York before moving to Vermont, where she has lived for more than 30 years. She taught Southern Fiction at St. Michael's College in Winooski, VT.
Alther has written five novels and a novella. She has said that she tries to find the "human reality behind the cultural stereotypes," and she uses humor to achieve that.
