First there was Russia, then there was the Soviet Union, now
there's Russia again. The Soviet Union is no more. Russia is the
name of the country now, as it was before.
The Soviet Union, or more formally the Union of Soviet Socialist
Republics or USSR, was composed of 15 different republics, of which
Russia was the most powerful. Now it has broken up into 15
independent nations.
