QI is a BBC comedy panel game television show that began in 2003. It was created by John Lloyd, hosted by Stephen Fry and features permanent panellist Alan Davies. QI (short for Quite Interesting) differs from other panel games in that points are given not only for right answers, but also for interesting ones, regardless whether they are right or even relevant to the original question. Conversely, points are deducted from a panellist who gives, "answers which are not only wrong, but pathetically obvious";[1] in other words, answers that are believed to be obvious by most people, but when examined closer turn out to be wrong.[2] For example, one question asked the panel to complete the phrase: "A chameleon changes colour to match its…", to which the correct answer is "mood". The obvious, but wrong, answer is that a chameleon changes colour to match its background as a form of camouflage.[1]
QI is a 26-year-long project; each series covers topics that begin with a different letter of the alphabet; for example, the first series covered topics whose word began with "A". Thus it is referred to as "Series A" instead of "Series One".[2][3] QI was given a full series after BBC executives responded well to a nonbroadcast pilot,[4] and the first episode, "Adam", was premiered on BBC Two on 11 September 2003.[5] From the second to the fifth series, episodes were aired each week on BBC Two; the second and subsequent episodes were shown first on BBC Four in the time-slot after the previous episode's BBC Two broadcast. When the sixth series of QI began in 2008, the show moved to BBC One and the broadcasting of episodes on BBC Four was replaced in favour of an extended repeat broadcast on BBC Two the following day, titled QI XL. Including the pilot, 75 episodes of QI have been produced. A seventh series, with 16 episodes, is to be made in 2009, which will bring the total number of episodes to 91.[3][6] Lloyd acted as the producer for the first five series. Series F was produced by Piers Fletcher.[7]
QI has been given several honours. In 2006, Fry won the Rose d'Or for "Best Game Show Host".[2] The British Comedy Guide voted QI the "Best British TV Panel Show/Satire" of 2006 and 2007.[8][9] In 2008, the series won the Royal Television Society award for "Entertainment" and the British Comedy Award for "Best TV Comedy Panel Show" in 2008. In 2008 and 2009, QI won the Televisual Bulldog Awards in the "Best Panel, Quiz or Chat Show" category.[2][10][11]
