list source

Marketing Dictionary: list source

1. Directory, association membership list, conference roster, or other origin of names on a compiled list.

2. Origin of a list as defined by the list owner, or the owner's means of collecting the names on a list, such as the Ace Seed Company customer list or the Ace Seed Company summer catalog buyers list. It is extremely important that direct marketing firms track response to their promotions by list source, so that they can select for future promotions only those lists that respond well. This is usually accomplished by printing a source key on each reply form or label, identifying not only their own promotion but also the source of each name.
