This page supplements the list of oldest people by nation, which itemizes the oldest people ever, by country. This page lists the oldest people currently alive by country.
Comprehensive birth registration is largely a 20th century phenomenon,[citation needed] so records establishing human longevity are necessarily fragmentary. The earliest comprehensive recordkeeping systems arose in Europe,[citation needed] which makes the continent the only place that the lifespans of people born in the 19th century can be documented and verified to the standards of modern scientific research.[citation needed] For example, the United Kingdom organized a central recordkeeping system for England and Wales in 1837,[citation needed] making it compulsory by 1874.[citation needed]
Mathematically, very few people born in the 20th century have yet had an opportunity to reach or surpass the age of 110. This is the age recognized by longevity researchers as the marker of supercentenarian status. Some of the people listed below may be recognized by their own nation as having attained an age of 110 years or greater, but their lifespan may not yet have been documented and verified sufficiently for them to be denominated a supercentenarian by the standards of modern longevity research.
This page lists the "recordholders" for various countries, to the extent that they can be established[by whom?] thus far. Those born in one country but who later moved to another are specifically noted.
