Liwa

Ottoman administrative unit. During the late Ottoman empire, a province (vilayet; Arabic: wilaya) was divided into liwas (called liva in Turkish). A liwa was also called a sanjak (Arabic: sanjaq). These in turn were divided into smaller units called qadas or kazas. See also Kaza, Mutasarrif, and Vilayet.
