He was known as Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, meaning Llywelyn son of
Gruffydd. Gruffydd being the eldest son of Llywelyn the Great. He
is known as 'the Last' because he was the last native Welsh prince
of Wales.

Llywelyn ap Gruffudd (1223-1282) was the last independent ruler
of Wales before its conquest by England. He was the grandson of
Llywelyn the Great, and died at the Battle of Orewin Bridge
(December 11, 1282).
