Satellites have come a long way since Russia launched the 183-pound, basketball-sized Sputnik in 1957. Today, Lockheed Martin Space Systems, one of four business segments of parent Lockheed Martin, designs and produces much larger and infinitely more complex government and commercial satellites (meteorological and communication), strategic and defensive missile systems, and space transportation systems. Space Systems' businesses also extend to human space flight, commercial space, and surveillance and navigation systems. The business unit is involved in two significant joint ventures: United Space Alliance (USA) and United Launch Alliance (ULA) -- both with Boeing. Customers include NASA, DoD, and the NOAA.
