Holding an asset for an extended period of time. Depending on the type of security, a long-term asset can be held for as little as one year or for as long as 30 years or more.

The media frequently advises people to "invest for the long term", but determining whether or not an investment is long term is very subjective. A day trader, for example, would define "long term" much differently than a buy-and-hold investor, who would consider anything less than several years to be short-term trading.

1. holding period of more than 12 months and applicable in calculating the Capital Gains Tax.
2. investment approach to the stock market in which an investor seeks appreciation by holding a stock for more than 12 months.
3. bond with a maturity of 10 years or longer.

| Banking Dictionary: Long-Term |
1. Loan with an original maturity of more than ten years, for example, a 30-year conventional mortgage loan.
2. Obligations, such as bonds, that will not become payable for a year or more.
3. Holding period (at least one year) for owning securities that qualifies, under Internal Revenue Service rules, for treatment as a long-term capital gain (or loss). Rates on long-term gains are identical to tax rates on short-term gains.

Long term, in economics, is the period of time required for economic agents to reallocate resources, and generally reestablish equilibrium.
The actual length of this period, usually numbered in years or decades, varies widely depending on circumstantial context. During the long term, all factors are variable.
