His older brother Louis-Joseph was actually the Dauphin of France and the heir. But he sadly perished on June 4, 1789 from tuberculosis at age 7. Louis-Charles became the Dauphin of France at age 4 after his brother's death. After the execution of his father on January 1793 he was seen by Royalists to be the next king of France.

Marie Antoinette had four children. They were Marie Therese of France, Louis XVII of France, Princess Sophie Hélène Beatrice of France and Louis Joseph, Dauphin of France.
