Loyola University New Orleans is part of the Jesuit network of universities and enrolls roughly 3,000 students. The university offers some 60 degree programs through five colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, City College, Music, and School of Law. The Louisiana State Legislature granted the charter to Loyola University in 1912. After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, the university cancelled its fall semester for the first time in Loyola's history. The school's estimated property damage totaled $4 million. Classes reconvened in January of 2006 and in April the school announced a restructuring plan that would eliminate several degree programs and 17 faculty positions.
