Seventh most popular name in early Ireland, borne by countless legendary warriors, illustrious forebears in genealogies, and saints. As in other instances of many personages bearing the same name, e.g. Ailill, the different Lugaids appear to borrow from one another's conception, the most seminal being Lugaid mac Con, the usurper of Munster. Additionally, the motifs of incest and triplism occur frequently in their stories.
