Iran is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the Middle East. While over 99% of the population is officially Muslim (90% Shiite and 9% Sunni), there is an incredible ethnic diversity. 61% of the population is Persian, 16% Azeri, 10% Kurd, 6% Lurs, 2% Arab, 2% Balochi, 2% Other Türkic Peoples, and 2% Other Groups.
