Luz

1. a Canaanite city which Jacob renamed Bethel, following his dream of the ladder and the setting up of the altar (Gen 28:19; 48:3).

In Joshua 16:2, Luz and Bethel are mentioned as two separate cities situated in the territory of Joseph, but in all other instances Luz is identified with Bethel (Gen 35:6; Josh 18:13; Judg 1:23).

Scholars assume that Jacob applied the name Bethel exclusively to the place where he slept, and that the city only received the name after the conquest of Canaan. See BETHEL.

2. A city founded in the "land of the Hittites", by a citizen of Bethel or Luz, who was forced to leave the city after the Israelites had conquered it (Judg 1:24-26).

The name "land of the Hittites", signifies here northern Syria and the place has been identified at Luweiz, 11 miles (18 km) southwest of Sidon, or with Khirbet Luweizie, west of Banias.
