Biography

Such heavy metal/rap bands as Rage Against the Machine and Korn paved the way for countless other bands in the '90s, including the California outfit, Snot. Many of Snot's fans would agree that what set the group apart from the rest of the pack was their charismatic frontman, Lynn Strait, who injected his hardcore roots into the group's music. But despite a promising future that lay ahead of the group, Strait's tragic death after only a single album would put an abrupt end to Snot by the end of the '90s. Born in Manhasset, New York sometime during 1968, Strait and his family relocated to Santa Barbara, California as a teenager, where he immediately embraced the local punk/hardcore scene. Although he had no previous experience singing in a band, Strait began working with regional groups, and even played bass for an outfit called Lethal Dose. By the mid '90s, Strait had made up his mind to front a group, leading to the formation of Snot. Joining Strait was bassist John Fahnestock, drummer Jamie Miller, plus guitarists Sonny Mayo and Mike Doling, who immediately built a solid following in the Los Angeles area with their explosive live show. The quintet inked a deal with Geffen shortly thereafter, although Strait wasn't present for the signing, as he was busy finishing a month-long sentence in a County Jail.

Snot's debut album, Get Some, was issued in 1997, and although it didn't race up the charts, it did land the group a prime spot on the next year's edition of Ozzfest (during which Strait was arrested at one point for 'indecent exposure' on stage). With rap-metal breaking out into the mainstream (courtesy of such acts as Limp Bizkit), many assumed that Snot would follow suit with their next release, which they were just about to enter the studio to begin work on. But the group never got their shot, as Strait was killed when his Ford Tempo collided with a truck on the 101 Freeway near Santa Barbara at approximately 1 p.m. on December 11, 1998 (also killed in the accident was Strait's beloved dog, Dobbs, who appeared on the cover of Snot's debut). Like other musicians who had died before their time, Strait's stature in the heavy music world continued to grow after his death, which resulted in a tribute album in 2000. Titled Strait Up, the album featured some of rock music's top names providing vocals to the tracks that Strait and his Snot mates were working on for their proposed second disc - including contributions from Jonathan Davis, Fred Durst, Serj Tankian, Max Cavalera, Lajon Witherspoon, and Mark McGrath, among others. The summer of 2002 saw another posthumous Snot release, the in-concert set, Alive!. In addition to his handful of recordings with Snot during his brief career, Strait also appeared on the track "Down" by Tura Satana (off their 1998 release, All is not Well). ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

James Lynn Strait (August 7, 1968 – December 11, 1998) was the lead singer and lyricist for the rock band Snot. He died in a car accident on December 11, 1998 at the age of 30.

Biography

Strait was born in Manhasset, New York, but moved to Santa Barbara as a teen and immediately embraced the SoCal punk scene. Prior to his work with Snot, Strait had never sung in a band. "I always wanted to because it seemed like a lot of fun. But I wasn't into what most bands were playing"[citation needed]. Starting from scratch was an advantage for Strait: "There's nobody to emulate. I won't say what I do is groundbreaking, but some of it is original; there are weird patterns in my vocals, because I got to make up my style as I went along"[citation needed].

Strait also served as the band's lyricist and appeared as a guest on Tura Satana's song 'Down', a duet with friend Tairrie B on Manhole/Tura Satana's first album.

Landing a record contract was a dream come true for some of his mates, but Strait was underwhelmed by the development. His response: "Yeah, now I can order cheese on my Whopper"[citation needed]. While his bandmates were signing the contracts, Strait was completing a month long sentence in County Jail, where he had spent a year in the early 1990s.

Death and legacy

According to California Highway Patrol reports, Lynn Strait was traveling from Santa Barbara, CA to Los Angeles and became involved in a six-car crash. The crash occurred on a highway off-ramp. Only one other driver, David Redderson, was injured in the crash and he was quickly released from Saint Francis Hospital in Santa Barbara. Also killed in the accident was Strait's dog, Dobbs, who graced the cover of the band's 1997 debut album, Get Some, and served as the group's mascot.

The band Sevendust paid tribute to Strait with the song "Angel's Son". As a tribute to the rocker, an album entitled Strait Up was released on November 7, 2000 on Virgin records. Compiled with the help of members of Limp Bizkit, Korn, Slipknot, Sevendust, Hed PE, Coal Chamber, Sugar Ray, System of a Down, Soulfly, Incubus, Ozzy Ozbourne and others. The album contains tributes to Lynn Strait with backing from the remaining band. Also on the record was a remixed version of Lynn Strait's last recording with the band Snot, a song entitled "Absent," the original version of which was included on the Strangeland soundtrack.

On August 7, 1999, on a move begun by Loudside.com and discovered and hyped by Soulfly.com and then MTV.com, fans were encouraged to buy copies of Snot's debut CD Get Some in an attempt to cause a jump in the charts on what would have been Lynn's 31st birthday.

The band My Ruin fronted by Tairrie B paid tribute to him with a song called "Rockstar". The Band NOFX mentions Lynn in their song 'Doornails' in which they pay tribute to deceased punk band members. British band Reuben paid tribute to him and Kurt Cobain in their song Push, from the Deadly Lethal Ninja Assassin single.
