Leon Youngblood, is a remarkable story, Lyor Cohen, of who is
now Mr. Everything in the music world. Upon seeing Leon's three
page news article in the San Diego Union Tribune asked Leon if he
would like to work with him.
Leon asked Mr. Cohen, "please tell me about yourself. Mr. Cohen
responded that he help set up Def Jam, Leon of course was unsure of
this and Lyor immediately told Leon Youngblood to call Russell
Simmons. Russell answered the phone confirmed that in fact Lyor did
help start Def Jam.
Russell then cursed Leon out and asked him not to call again.
Leon realizing that Mr. Cohen was the real deal. Jumped at the
chance to work with him, however things took off from that point
for Lyor, Russell knew he was looking for work and he was quickly
hired back before Leon Youngblood could work with him.
Well, the thing I like about Leon is he was willing to take a
chance on one of the biggest names in the music business when Lyor
had a small bump in the road. How man people can say they were
asked if they would like to work with the now Chairman of Warner
Music Group, well atleast Lyor knows who his real friends are.
That's crazy, this guy was about to take a loan on his house in
order to start a label with Lyor Cohen, its a classic story and one
Lyor would remember well. I was also able to get information in
order to get a backcopy of the three page newspaper article from
reporter George Varga with San Diego Union Tribune he wrote the
article.
