Augustus Ferdinand Möbius

Britannica Concise Encyclopedia: August Ferdinand Möbius

(born Nov. 17, 1790, Schulpforta, Saxony — died Sept. 26, 1868, Leipzig) German mathematician and theoretical astronomer. He began teaching at the University of Leipzig in 1815, and established his reputation with many publications. His mathematical papers are chiefly concerned with geometry. He introduced homogeneous coordinates into analytic geometry and dealt with geometric transformations, in particular projective transformations. He was a pioneer in topology; in a memoir discovered after his death he discussed the properties of one-sided surfaces, including the famous Möbius strip.

German mathematician (1790–1868)

Möbius worked mainly on analytical geometry, topology, and theoretical astronomy. He was born at Schulpforta in Germany and held a chair in theoretical astronomy at Leipzig, making numerous contributions to the field with publications on planetary occultations (‘eclipses’) and celestial mechanics. His more purely mathematical work centers on geometry and topology.

Möbius is chiefly famed for his discovery of the Möbius strip, a one-sided surface formed by giving a rectangular strip a half-twist and then joining the ends together. He introduced the use of homogeneous coordinates into analytical geometry and did significant work in projective geometry, inventing the Möbius net, which became of central importance in the future development of the subject.

Möbius, Augustus Ferdinand ('bēəs, Ger. mö'bēəs),(1790-1868), German mathematician and astronomer, b. Schulpforta, Saxony. A professor of astronomy at the Univ. of Leipzig, he made important contributions to theoretical astronomy with his publications The Principles of Astronomy (1836) and The Elements of Celestial Mechanics (1843). Möbius also focused on analytical geometry and was a pioneer in topology. He is best known, however, for his invention of the Möbius strip-a flat, rectangular strip with a half-twist and ends connected to form a continuous-sided, single-edged loop (see topology)-and the Möbius net, an important configuration in projective geometry.
