Maccabi Netanya F.C. (Hebrew: מועדון כדורגל מכבי נתניה, Moadon Kaduregel Maccabi Netanya) is an Israeli football club, playing in the city of Netanya.
The team, which plays (as of 2006) in Israel's Ligat ha'Al, has a rich history, especially in the 1970s.
History
The club was established in the year 1934 in the Israeli city of Netanya. Maccabi Netanya has a history of over 40 seasons in the Israeli premier League.
Maccabi Netanya started playing in uniforms with green and white stripes. In 1975 the team started playing in uniforms with the colours black and yellow.
During Netanya's bright days, the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, the league was called "Netanya and another 15", showing the supremacy of the club. In those days, most of the players on the Israel national football team were from Maccabi Netanya.
In 1978 the group won The Treble: the National Cup, the Israeli Championship, and were the head of the house in the Intertoto home stage.
But in the mid-1980s the group started to lose its prestige and moved from first league to second league for a number of years.
During the 2003/04 season, the team again moved down to the second league, but the following year Maccabi Netanya returned to the first league, where it remains.
In 2006, Maccabi Netanya was bought by the Jewish-German business man named Daniel Jammer. After buying the team, Jammer brought many new players to the team, both Israelis and foreigners.
Rivalry
There is a strong rivalry between Netanya and Beitar Nes Tubruk. Originally, there were hopes of the two clubs uniting so as not to split allegiances of kids in the city. The merger never came to fruition and since, the two clubs have been at eachothers throats both claiming that the other has forced a child not to switch clubs, which is illegal in Israel. Netanya has invested heavily in its youth system as of late and results have been seen on the field. When two Tubruk players came to shake hands with Netanya players after a derby match in Liga Leumit l'Noar, they were subsequently left out of the team for the club's next league match.
Things have gotten so bad that the war of words has extended into the court room as the clubs battle over the rights to many youth talents who are under the age of fifteen and would like to switch clubs[1].
