Review

Produced by Scott Litt, Incubus' second full-length album, Make Yourself, makes a bid for broader mainstream success while keeping the group rooted in a hybrid of familiar late '90s alt-metal (i.e., roaring guitars, white-noise sonic textures, and an undercurrent of electronics) and Chili Pepper funk-rock. Where S.C.I.E.N.C.E. sometimes veered abruptly between the two genres without really fusing them, Make Yourself finds the band settling more comfortably into its sound, and once again, there are a few really good singles. Once again, too, there are still a few awkward moments and underwritten songs, but overall, the album should definitely please fans. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Make Yourself is the third album by American rock band Incubus, released through Sony on October 26, 1999. The album has been certified double platinum in the United States with having three charting singles, "Pardon Me", "Stellar", and "Drive", all of which reached the top three of the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

There is also a tour edition for the album, with a second disc containing three acoustic tracks and one live track. The album is the first to be recorded with new turntablist Chris Kilmore, who replaced DJ Lyfe.

Despite seven uses of the word "fuck" in the title track "Make Yourself" (as well as numerous other profanities featured in a number of the songs), the album evaded a Parental Advisory label.

The song "Stellar" is featured in the video game Guitar Hero. It also was included as a part of a 3-song pack via Xbox Live for the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II on April 11, 2007. The song is also again featured in Guitar Hero Smash Hits. The song "Drive" was released as downloadable content for Guitar Hero World Tour, as being released as a part of the Acoustic Pack.

The album is featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
