A classical Greek warrior was called a Hoplite.

The main weapon of the hoplite was a spear called a dory. It was about 8 feet long with a metal spear tip and a smaller point on the bottom called a 'lizard stabber'. The reason for the 'lizard stabber' was so the hoplite could stick the spear into the ground. It could also be used in an emergency if the shaft of the spear was broken so the hoplite could use the 'lizard stabber' end as a weapon.

Most hoplites also carried a sword. There were different types but the most common were the xiphos which was a straight sword with a leaf shaped blade or the makhaira which had a curved blade and looked a lot like a machete.
