Biography

A multi-talented artist, Marc Anthony (born Marco Antonio Muniz) has balanced an acting career with a musical career. In addition to appearing in films like The Substitute, Big Night, and Hackers, and in Broadway productions such as Paul Simon's Capeman, Anthony rose to the top level of Latino music. The biggest-selling salsa artist of all time, Anthony was included on a top ten list of influential New Yorkers compiled by New York Magazine.

Instructed in music theory and composition by his father, Anthony grew up listening to Latin musicians, including Rubén Blades, Hector Lavoe, and Willie Colón, and contemporary pop recordings by Air Supply and José Feliciano. At age 12, Anthony and his sister were discovered by David Harris, a producer of demos and commercials; Anthony was hired to sing background on several productions. His songwriting skills became evident, and an early composition, "Boy, I've Been Told," became a Top 40 hip-hop hit for school friend Safire. Anthony subsequently sang background vocals on Safire's debut album. He also sang on albums by the Latin Rascals and Menudo.

Teaming with producer and disc jockey Little Louie Vega, Anthony recorded his debut album, When the Night Is Over, in 1991. The Latin hip-hop-style album, which featured guest appearances by Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri, included the single "Ride on the Rhythm," which reached the top slot on Billboard's dance music charts. On November 22, 1991, Anthony was the opening act on a show at Madison Square Garden that celebrated Puente's 100th album release. Anthony's second album, Otra Nota (produced and arranged by Sergio George), was a better representation of Anthony's salsa roots and included the original tune "Juego o Amor." Todo a Su Tiempo, released in 1995, was a continuation of Anthony's collaboration with George.

With his fourth album, Contra la Corriente, Anthony began working with producer/arranger Angel "Cucco" Peña, and it won the 1999 Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Performance. A self-titled English-language album released in 1999 was an overt attempt at crossing over to the mainstream, and it did reach the Top Ten of the main Billboard album chart, with "I Need to Know" peaking at number three. While 2002's Mended was an even greater commercial success, Anthony continued to release Spanish-language albums that were closer to his roots, like 2001's Libre and 2004's Amar sin Mentiras. His profile was only raised by starring as Héctor Lavoe in 2007's El Cantante, which co-starred his wife, Jennifer Lopez. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Biography

From recording studios to Hollywood soundstages, singer/actor Marc Anthony has taken both the music and movie industries by storm. Born in New York City and named after legendary Mexican singer Marco Antonio Muñiz by his musician father, he eventually changed his name to Marc Anthony in order to avoid confusion. As a young talent, he belted out songs in his family's Spanish Harlem kitchen, his R&B influences shining through. In the years that followed, Anthony's reputation grew thanks to English-language performances in many New York clubs, and after teaming with producer "Little" Louie Vega for his record debut (When the Night Is Over) in 1991, Tito Puente asked Anthony to open the Latin jazz legend's Madison Square Garden revue in November of that year. Though Anthony had previously declined suggestions by his manager to record songs in Spanish, it was, ironically, a Spanish-language song that offered the singer his first true taste of success. Emotionally devastated after hearing Juan Gabriel's "Hasta Que Te Conoci" on the radio while driving around Manhattan, Anthony instinctively knew that this song was his destiny. In 1993, he went back into the studio to record his first Spanish track, and a searing performance at the Radio Y Musica Latin music convention shortly thereafter -- followed by a career-defining appearance on television's Carnaval Internacional later that same day -- changed his life forever.

In the years that followed, Anthony not only established himself as an electrifying stage presence, but a talented actor, as well. After kicking off his screen career with a supporting role in the 1988 musical comedy East Side Story, he appeared as a performer in director Brian De Palma's acclaimed 1993 crime drama Carlito's Way. Supporting roles in Natural Causes (1994) and Hackers (1995) were quick to follow, and, in 1996, Anthony landed his first major film role in Stanley Tucci's Big Night. Impressive performances in Martin Scorsese's Bringing Out the Dead (1999) and the romantic drama In the Time of Butterflies (2001) followed. Meanwhile, his singing career was still going strong with such albums as Libre (2001) and Mended (2002). Anthony returned to the screen in 2004 with a role in the Denzel Washington vehicle Man on Fire. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Marc Anthony (born Marco Antonio Muñiz; September 16, 1968) is an American & Latin Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter, actor and producer. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Marc Anthony is the top selling tropical salsa artist of all time. The five-time Grammy winner has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. He is best known for his Latin salsa numbers and ballads. Marc Anthony was the first solo salsa act to ever sell out Madison Square Garden.

Marc is considered a melodramatic performer, often acting out his songs, physically accentuating key musical breaks and words with hand pumps, kicks and dances, shouting out patented key phrases (such as "Joma", "Jojomaaa" [enlongaged], "Chi-chi", a raspy "wow" and "Boricua"), holding notes for extended periods of time and playing conductor to his band's music.

Marc Anthony has won numerous awards and his achievements have been honored through various recognitions.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) announced Puerto Rican singer Marc Anthony as the recipient of the 2009 CHCI Chair's Award. Hon. Nydia Velazquez (NY-12), CHCI Chair, honored Marc Anthony, one of the most influential artists of his generation, with the prestigious "2009 CHCI Chair's Lifetime Achievement Award" at CHCI's 32nd Annual Awards Gala on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 in Washington, D.C. CHCI Annual Awards Gala is the keynote event during Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 - October 15.[1]

Marc Anthony is recognized for helping bring Latin music into the mainstream.

Marc Anthony is currently a minority owner/limited partner of the NFL Miami Dolphins football team.[2]

Biography

Personal life

Anthony was born Marco Antonio Muñiz in New York City, to Guillermina, a housewife, and Felipe Muñiz, a musician and hospital lunchroom worker.[3] His parents are Puerto Rican and named him after Marco Antonio Muñiz. He has a sister named Yolanda Muñiz. He also has 4 older brothers and 2 additional older sisters, 4 siblings from his mother's and 2 siblings from his father's prior marriages.

Anthony has a daughter, Arianna (1994), with his NYPD police officer ex-girlfriend Debbie Rosado.

Dayanara Torres

Anthony married former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres on May 9, 2000 in Las Vegas. They have two sons, Cristian Marcus Muñiz (February 5, 2001) and Ryan Adrian Muñiz (August 16, 2003). It was a rocky marriage, and they separated in early 2002. They later reconciled and renewed their vows in a ceremony held in Puerto Rico in December 2002.[4] The couple's final separation was in October 2003. Torres filed for divorce in January 2004.

In 2003, a Miami waitress filed paternity charges against Anthony; multiple DNA tests, the last in August 2008, disproved her claims.

Jennifer Lopez

As his divorce proceeded, Anthony was seen out with Jennifer Lopez, a long-time friend he had worked with in music videos. They had briefly dated in the late '90s, before his first marriage and her second. Lopez and Anthony were recording a duet together in early 2004, for Lopez's then-upcoming film Shall We Dance?. Lopez and Anthony married in a quiet home wedding on June 5, 2004, less than a week after his divorce from Torres was finalized on June 1. On the morning of the wedding, however, the media was tipped off and circled her backyard in helicopters. Reports fueled rumors that Lopez was pregnant but this was not the case.

Their guests had been invited to an "afternoon party" at Lopez's house and had not been made aware that they were actually going to her wedding. The couple had planned not to publicize their marriage early on, allowing more privacy and time together in an otherwise intrusive environment. Days after the wedding, Anthony refused to comment on their marriage during interviews which were scheduled earlier to promote a new album "Amar Sin Mentiras" (To Love Without Lies), which would earn him a Grammy award the following year..[5] In February 2005 Lopez confirmed the marriage, and added that "Everyone knows. It's not a secret".[6] A few months later, Anthony's daughter, Arianna, appeared at the beginning and the end of her new stepmother Jennifer's music video music video "Get Right" as her little sister.

After weeks of speculation, on November 8, 2007, Marc and Jennifer confirmed to fans in a Miami concert that Lopez was pregnant. Twins Emme Maribel Muñiz and Maximillian David Muñiz arrived February 22, 2008 in a New York hospital. They were introduced in People magazine in the March 11, 2008 issue. People paid $6 million for the photos.[7][8]

In 2009, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez purchased a stake in the Miami Dolphins. They joined several personalities in buying small stakes in the club, including Gloria and Emilio Estefan and Venus and Serena Williams.[9]

Singing career

Marc Anthony began his career as a session vocalist for Freestyle music and Underground New York House music acts. After changing his name to avoid confusion with his namesake, Anthony worked as a songwriter and backing vocalist for pop acts including Menudo and the Latin Rascals. His first album was a Freestyle music record, "Rebel", in 1988 on Bluedog Records. That same year he wrote and produced "Boy I've Been Told" for fellow Freestyle artist Sa-Fire. Then in 1989, he sang backup vocals for Ann-Marie, another fellow Freestyle artist on the Freestyle club hit, "With or Without You" produced by Little Louie Vega and Todd Terry. A year later, 1990, with Little Louie Vega and Todd Terry, Marc wrote and whispered a duet with Freestyle artist Chrissy I-eece, called "You Should Know By Now". In 1991, he sang backing vocals for another Freestyle track by the artist Edmond titled "Come Back To Me". In 1992, still working with Todd Terry, he provided vocals for the Freestyle cut "Love Change" which is on the flip-side of a 12" vinyl released by Elan and The Powermachine titled "Here's Your Hat", production of Todd Terry. At the same time, he collaborated with his other Freestyle music producer Little Louie Vega, who featured the singer on many another Freestyle-flavored club hit "Ride On The Rhythm" and "When The Night Is Over" album, which featured the Freestyle classic "Time". In 1992, Vega and Anthony opened for Latin bandleader Tito Puente at New York's Madison Square Garden. After 1992, he changed his style from Freestyle music to salsa and other Spanish music.

The RMM Years

Otra Nota (1993) Inspired by the music of Puente, Rubén Blades and Juan Gabriel, Anthony released his Spanish-language debut, Otra nota, in 1993, with the salsa hit "Hasta que te conocí" (Until I Met You), a famous song by Mexican singer Juan Gabriel, Marc performed at the Radio y Musica Convention hosted by Alfredo Alonso.[10] "Si Tu No Te Fueras", "El Ultimo Beso", "Palabras Del Alma", Though it was mostly a Spanish album, it did feature one English song, "Make It With You". Subsequent tours throughout the Americas, including an opening slot for Blades, established Anthony as one of the new stars in salsa. In 1994, he was featured in La India's album "Dicen Que Soy", in the song "Vivir Lo Nuestro".

Todo A Su Tiempo (1995)

His 1995 follow-up, Todo a su tiempo, has won Anthony a Billboard award for Hot Tropical Artist of the Year. The album was also nominated for a Grammy with songs like "Te Conozco Bien", "Hasta Ayer", "Nadie Como Ella", "Se Me Sigue Olvidando", "Te Amare", and "Llegaste A Mi". The album has sold more than 800,000 copies and has became established gold in the US and in Puerto Rico.

Contra la Corriente (1997)

In the November of 1997, Anthony's more traditional-sounding follow-up, Contra la Corriente, was promoted by a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden and won the 1999 Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Performance. The album's notable songs include "Y Hubo Alguien", which became his first number 1 single on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks Chart, "Contra La Corriente", "No Me Conoces", which the video features his then-friend Jennifer Lopez, who he went on to marry in 2004, "Me Voy A Regalar", and "No Sabes Como Duele". This album was the first salsa album in history to enter the Billboard 200 chart. After an ongoing battle with Mercado and RMM, the indie record company that Anthony has signed to begin with, he no longer wanted any business with Ralph Mercado, and he left RMM in 1999.

Move to Sony BMG

Anthony subsequently recorded the duet "No Me Ames", with Jennifer Lopez on her album On the 6.

Marc Anthony (1999) In 1999, attempting to emulate the crossover success of Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin in the anglophone market, Anthony, working with top producers, Walter Afanasieff, Cory Rooney, Dan Shea, and Rodney Jerkins, released an English-language Latin Pop self titled album with the US Top 5 hit single "I Need to Know", and the Spanish version "Dímelo". Other hits include "When I Dream At Night" and "My Baby You". His song "You Sang To Me", was featured in Runaway Bride. The successful dance version was re-mixed by Dutch producer Rene Van Verseveld. The foray was considered a mixed success, partly because it alienated his traditional salsa fans, though "Da La Vuelta" (not a Spanish version of any of the songs) was a salsa song and was a hit. Another note is that the song "That's Okay" has more of a salsa tune than pop.

Libre (2001) In 2001, he debuted another salsa album known as Libre and was certified gold with songs like "Celos", "Este Loco Que Te Mira", and "Viviendo". "Barco A La Deriva", another hit in Libre, was previously performed by Venezuelan singer and actor Guillermo Dávila. The album spent 14 weeks at the number one spot on the Billboard Latin Albums chart.

Mended (2002) The year after that, he made another English-language album called Mended which included smash hit "I've Got You", the Spanish version "Te Tengo Aquí", "I Need You" (the Spanish version of which, "Me Haces Falta", was written by Mexican star Thalía), "Tragedy", "Love Won't Get Any Better", and "She Mends Me". Like his self-titled Marc Anthony album, it received mixed reviews, though slightly lower.[citation needed]

Amar Sin Mentiras and Valio la Pena (2004) In June 2004 he released a Latin Pop album Amar Sin Mentiras. On July 2004, he converted those songs to salsa in another album, Valio La Pena and included the traditional "Lamento Boricano" that was composed by Rafael Hernández. Notable songs of both albums include "Ahora Quien", "Escapémonos" with Jennifer Lopez, "Valió La Pena", "Se Esfuma Tu Amor", and "Tu Amor Me Hace Bien". In the Latin Grammy Awards 2005, his Amar Sin Mentiras won best Latin Pop Album of The Year and his Valió La Pena won Best Tropical Album of The Year. Lopez and Anthony performed "Escapémonos" at the 2005 Grammy Awards.

Sigo Siendo Yo (2006)

On July 11, 2006 Marc Anthony released "Sigo Siendo Yo", a Spanish greatest-hits album. "Que Precio Tiene El Cielo" was the 1st single salsa song and "Lo Que No Di" as a Latin pop song.

Acting career

Anthony appeared alongside Ruben Blades and Latin Pop singer Ednita Nazario in Paul Simon's 1998 stage musical, The Capeman, which was unsuccessful and ran for only 68 performances.

Anthony has also appeared in a few motion pictures including the 1995 film Hackers, 1996's Big Night, Martin Scorsese's 1999 film Bringing Out the Dead, and Tony Scott's 2004 film Man on Fire.

Anthony stars as Hector Lavoe in El Cantante along with his wife (who acts as Lavoe's wife in the film) which was released in August 2007. It opened to poor box office performance and the film, as well as Anthony's acting, received dismal reviews.

Appearances

He appeared at the Movies Rock along with his wife Jennifer Lopez in 2007 where he performed Simon & Garfunkle's "Mrs. Robinson".

Marc Anthony sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" when Oscar de la Hoya fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the WBC Welterweight title.

On September 21, 2001 he also sang the national anthem at Shea Stadium in the first game after the attack on the World Trade Center. On September 28, 2008, he sang the national anthem again at Shea Stadium for the New York Mets final regular season game.

On October 12th, 2009 Anthony sang the national anthem as the Miami Dolphins played their 5th regular season game against the New York Jets.
