Biography
The daughter of screen legend Jean-Louis Trintignant, Marie Trintignant made her film debut in mother Nadine's Mon Amour, Mon Amour at the tender age of four, she would essay a series of diverse film and television roles while growing to become a household name in her native France. Though her parents would divorce in 1976, young Trintignant went on to appear in the films of her mother's new beau, Alain Corneau. Her closeness to her father helped in convincing him to appear in director Krzysztof Kieslowski's Red (1994), and the father/daughter team would later appear on-stage together to read the poetry of Guillaume Apollinaire. Equally adept at drama and comedy, the husky-voiced actress would distinguish herself with roles in such films as Corneau's Série Noire (1978) and as the troubled titular character in Claude Chabrol's 1992 drama Betty (1992). Trintignant had a son (actor Roman Kolinka) with musician Richard Kolinka and another with actor François Cluzet. Later married to director Samuel Benchetrit, the couple produced two more sons. Unfortunately, tragedy would strike as the result of Trintignant's relationship with Noir Desir frontman Bertrand Cantat in late July of 2003. A call from husband Benchetrit threw Cantat into a jealous rage, during which he struck the actress in the head, sending her into a deep coma. At the time Trintignant had been in Lithuania essaying the title role in mother Nadine's made-for-television feature Colette, and though doctors would subsequently transport the actress to Vilnuis for emergency surgery, the damage had been done, and Trintignant died four days later. Early life
She was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, the daughter of actor Jean-Louis Trintignant and his second wife Nadine Marquand. She first appeared on screen aged 4 in her mother's film, My Love, My Love. When Marie's baby sister Pauline died when Marie was 8, she became withdrawn and virtually stopped speaking. Her parents divorced in 1976. Throughout her early life she was afflicted by severe shyness, but despite this, by her mid-teens she decided to become an actress. She had such a strong affection for animals that she had first dreamt of becoming a veterinarian, but the acting heritage proved too strong. 'Cats don't raise dogs,' she said succinctly.[1]
Family
She was the mother of four sons: Roman with drummer Richard Kolinka; Paul with actor François Cluzet; Léon with Mathias Othnin-Girard; and Jules with director Samuel Benchetrit.
Death
Marie Trintignant died aged 41 of a cerebral edema on 1 August 2003 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, as a result of being repeatedly punched[citation needed] by her boyfriend Bertrand Cantat, lead singer with the French rock group, Noir Désir, during a domestic dispute provoked by a text message. Trintignant was in Vilnius, Lithuania, at the time, making a movie about the French novelist Colette. Cantat and Trintignant had been lovers for 18 months. Medical evidence suggested the slightly built Mme Trintignant had been struck in the face at least 19 times. Emergency services were only alerted seven hours later, by which time the actress was in a deep coma from which she never recovered. Her parents had her flown back to Paris where she died. Her death caused considerable emotion in France where the popular media divided into pro- and anti- Cantat camps and celebrity magazines were dominated for months by the "affaire Trintignant". Bertrand Cantat was sentenced to 8 years in prison for manslaughter. He was released for good behaviour in October 2007 after serving four years. Marie Trintignant is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery, in Paris.

She also appeared in the film noir Série noire of 1979. Not long before her death she sang a duet in the song "Pièce montée des grands jours" on an album with the same title by French folksinger Thomas Fersen in 2003.
