Mary Cantwell grew up as part of a Catholic family in a small Protestant town. After graduating from Connecticut College in 1953, she moved to New York City. She found work at various publishing and magazine companies and, eventually, wrote about her life in her books, American Girl: Scenes from a Small-Town Childhood and Manhattan, When I Was Young.
