Ashgabat (Aşkabat), Anau(Änew), Balkanabat, Dashoguz(Daşoguz), Mary, Turkmenabat(Türkmenabat), and Turkmenbashi(Türkmenbaşı) are examples of cities in Turkmenistan.
Specifically, Ashgabat is the capital city of the Central Asian Turkic state of Turkmenistan. The country is divided into five (5) provinces. Following are the capital cities of each province:
1. Anau, Ahal Province;
2. Balkanabat, Balkan Province;
3. Dashoguz, Dashoguz Province.
4. Mary, Mary Province;
5. Turkmenabat, Lebap Province.
Turkmenbashi has become important through the transfer of jobs in industry and transportation from Turkmenabat during the years that the country was part of the former Soviet Union.
