The Massachusetts Academy is a fictional prep school in the Marvel Universe. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, it first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #151 (cover date November 1981).
Founded in the 1700s in the Berkshire Mountains of Snow Valley, Massachusetts, the Academy is one of the oldest and most respected college preparatory schools in the United States. Administered by Emma Frost for most of its modern history, the Massachusetts Academy also had a long-standing alliance with the Hellfire Club. In addition to a large student body, the Academy also houses a clandestine school for young mutants. During her time as the Hellfire Club's White Queen, Frost trained a group known as the Hellions; the Hellions would become long-standing rivals with the New Mutants.
After the death of the Hellions,[1] Frost temporarily retired from teaching and withdrew from the Hellfire Club. Reexamining her teaching methods, Frost would align herself with Professor Charles Xavier and the X-Men, and the Massachusetts Academy reopened as the new site of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Together with co-headmaster Sean Cassidy (Banshee), Frost would train a new class of young mutants, Generation X.
After a period of operating as a school exclusively for the training of mutants, the Massachusetts Academy would resume functioning as a broader educational facility.

The Massachusetts Academy is referenced by Wolverine in Wolverine and the X-Men, episode 3, when Emma shows up at the Institute. He describes it as a place that tried to imitate Xavier's, as the students bullied people instead of being taught to control their powers. Emma later closed her school due to the suffering her students endured at the hands of anti-mutant protestors. But she eventually missed teaching and decided to join the X-Men.
