maxillofacial pain

Dental Dictionary: maxillofacial pain

n

Any pain in the region of the jaws or face. Usually coupled with oral pain; that is, oral and maxillofacial pain may be present together. Maxillofacial pain frequently is associated with functional disorders of the temporomandibular joint and the muscles of mastication, which in turn may arise from structural problems in the occlusion of the teeth. Determining the cause of maxillofacial pain may require comprehensive study of many possible factors or agents.
