(b Leningrad, 10 May 1938). Russian conductor and pianist, son of Dmitry Shostakovich. He studied at Moscow under Fliyer and took conducting under Gauk, Rozhdestvensky and Markevich. He was assistant conductor of the Moscow PO from 1963 and the USSR State SO from 1966, later principal conductor of the State RSO. He has conducted the premièes of several of his father's works, including Symphony no.15, and was soloist in Piano Concerto no.2 (written for him). In 1981 he settled in the West. He is a conductor of considerable dynamism and intensity.
