Memory Banking and Ranking are two terms people often confuse with. Banking happens at the memory slot level. Completing one loop makes a bank. Computers with DDR2 and above technology will have more than two memory slots. However, when using more than on RAM stick, you always used matching pairs and put them into one back - that is two slots. Memory ranking on the other hand, happens or is done in the memory module level. Rank of a memory decides priority. General system comes with ranking 1R. If you look at servers, then you might find larger rankings. To identify the rank, just look on the sticker of the memory module and you will find an entry like 1R or 2R. That is the rank. If that sticker is not present, then you can check in BIOS and it will tell you. Depending on the system manufacturer, the design or the location of this information might change.
