Pertaining to mercury as a bivalent element; containing bivalent mercury.

  • m. chloride, m. bichloride — used as a skin antiseptic and disinfectant and counterirritant; is limited by its toxicity and irritant properties.
  • m. iodide — a counterirritant and vesicant; use of this compound in blisters for horses has been discontinued because of its renal and hepatic toxicity.
  • m. nitrate — has antiseptic and miticidal properties; once used topically in the treatment of demodectic mange in dogs, but replaced by safer and more effective agents.
  • m. oxide — a topical antiseptic, used in ointment form for eye disorders. Called also yellow oxide.
