  5. Nautical. A chain or rope used for hauling in a cable. Also called messenger line.

Bank employee whose job is collection, by direct presentment, of checks, notes, and drafts that are not drawn on clearinghouse banks and thus are not collectible through a clearinghouse. Messengers also collect special items from brokerages and corporations, such as drafts with stocks or bonds attached. Collection by messenger is frequently known as collections by hand.
