metabolic acidosis

Abnormally high acidity of body fluids caused by loss of base, or an excessive production or ingestion of acid other than carbonic acid. One of the main causes of metabolic acidosis is the accumulation of organic acids, especially lactic acid, during heavy exercise. Metabolic acidosis may lead to muscle fatigue. Compare respiratory acidosis.
