Mian (Urdu: میاں) is family name and a title of nobility and used by Muslims in the Punjab region of South Asia.

Arain
Arain Mians are the leaders of the Arain tribe. Other titles used by Arain tribe include Chaudhry, Sardar, Malik, and Mehr. Arain from Lahore include the famous Mian Arain of Koochan Teergaraan,Akbari Gate, Lahore,Hushyarpur, Bhaati Gate, Mozang Chungi, Ichra, Sanda, Mughalpura, Baghbanpura, Singhpura, Dharampura, JalandharAmritsar and Qila Gujjar Singh at Lahore. The origin of the Arains is said to be Hijaz, modern (Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and Saudi Arabia).[1] They are the desandants of the Arab Soldiers who arrived with Muhammad bin Qasim in 711 AD.[2] They arrived when a Hindu King of Sindh, Pakistan, Raja Dahir captured a trading ship of Muslims Arab traders. Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, the Umayyad governor send 6000 brave Arab soldiers drawn from Areeha cantonment which was the part of Syria at that time. These 6,000 Umayyad soldiers accompanied Muhammad Bin Qasim, defeated Raja Dahir, and permanently settled in South Asia. The following 6000 Umayyad soldiers were known as Areehai which is changed now into (Arain).[3]
Hill Rajputs
It can be used to mean a variety of men in notable positions, including Sardar, or more informally for an owner, or a respectable and honorable man or husband. It is also a hereditary title for a group of Muslim Rajput clans from the Hill states of South Asia including Himanchal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.[4] hence Mian could also be Hindu or Muslim from Muslim Rajput and Khatri origins. After the advent of Islam, most of these clans were converted to Islam but have continued to use Mian as a surname. - Pakistan (Wan Bhachran at the feet of Kirana Bar in Mianwali District)

- Justice Mian Shah Din (1868-1918) - First Muslim Judge in British India.
- Sir Mian Muhammad Shafi (1869-1932) - Member of Viceroy's Executive Council.
- Justice Sir Mian Abdur Rasheed - First Chief Justice of Pakistan (1947).
