American Theater Guide: Michael Stewart [Rubin]

Stewart [Rubin], Michael [né Rubin] (1929–87), librettist and lyricist. The Yale‐educated New Yorker came to playgoers' attention with sketches for revues in the 1950s. He subsequently wrote the books for such musicals as Bye Bye Birdie (1960); Carnival! (1961); Hello, Dolly! (1964); George M! (1968); Mack and Mabel (1974); The Grand Tour (1979); 42nd Street (1980); Bring Back Birdie (1981); and Harrigan 'n Hart (1985). Stewart also provided both book and lyrics for I Love My Wife (1977) and Barnum (1980).
