During the first stage of the life stage the butterfly has a
micropyle. The micropyle is a funnel shaped opening located at the
bottom of the egg.

The micropyle opening allows the pollen tube to enter the ovule
for fertilization. It absorbs water for germination. It provides
for the diffusion of respiratory gases.
