A microscopic injury, usually affecting connective tissue (e.g. bone). Cumulative microtrauma can cause a major injury. Running on hard roads, for example, may create microscopic fractures in the shin bone (tibia). If a runner overtrains and does not allow microfractures to heal, they may join together to form deeper fractures that produce a dull aching pain along the shins. See also shin splints.
