The founder of the Millerites had no formal education beyond local schooling. He began in a Baptist home and became a 'Deist' in his early life. After the War of 1812, he attempted to merge his Baptist's roots to his Deist beliefs. In circa 1815 he was challenged by his Deists friends to prove one or the other. He began his private study of the Bible then and continued to his death in December 1849, five years after 'Millerites Great Disappointment.'

The Second Great Awakening happened during the early 19th century in the United States and was a Protestant revival movement that expected the Second Coming of Christ. According to the Millerites, this was to happen in 1844.
