Comic Spike Milligan (1918-2002) was best known as the co-creator and chief writer of The Goon Show, a British radio comedy show which has been credited for influencing comedians such as those responsible for Monty Python's Flying Circus, Firesign Theater and National Lampoon.
Milligan was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in the 2000 New Year Honors List. Because he was an Irish citizen, and refused British citizenship, he was eligible to receive only an Honorary Knight of the British Empire title, and therefore could not be referred to officially as Sir Milligan.
