The title "Dalai Lama" is presently granted to each of the spiritual leader's successive incarnations (for example, The 14th Dalai Lama's next incarnation will hold the title "the 15th Dalai Lama"). In the Himalayan tradition, phowa (Tibetan) is the discipline that transfers the mindstream to the intended body. Upon the death of the Dalai Lama and consultion with the Nechung Oracle, a search for the Lama's reincarnation, or yangsi (yang srid), is conducted. Familiarity with the possessions or attributes of the previous Dalai Lama is considered the main sign of the tulku. The search for the reincarnated mindstream typically requires a number of years. Buddhists believe in reincarnation: that the "mindstream" continues from one life to the next. Throughout many lifetimes a person can become more and more aware of the true nature of reality, and eventually reach nirvana, and not continue being reincarnated. Boddhisattvas are people who have understood the true nature of reality, but choose to continue in Samsara (the cycle of rebirth) out of compassion for other beings. They choose to continue to help others understand the true nature of reality, and keep on in Samsara until every being is enlightened.

The opposite of suffering in Buddhist epistemology is not really happiness or even the cessation of suffering, but freedom from the polarizing concept that causes us to be attracted to some things and averse to others. Suffering is thought to be the result of confused thinking. People think that to be happy, they need to grasp at those things that they think will bring them pleasure. We are very attached to this idea; that having what we want will bring us happiness. It is actually that grasping, that attachment that causes suffering.
