(b Greeley, co, 23 Oct 1906). American composer and teacher. She studied at Boston University (BA 1926), Columbia University (MA 1946) and at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (DSM 1970) as well as with Lazare Saminsky and Sessions; she later taught at City University, New York. She has composed extensively in all categories; much of her later music is for solo voice and instrumental ensemble, including several cycles. Her music is freely atonal with wide dissonant leaps in the melodic lines and dramatic contrasts.
