is a prefix with the meaning 'badly, 'wrongly'. Words formed with it do not need a hyphen, even when the stem begins with an s: misbehave, miscarriage, miscount, mismanage, misshapen, misspelling, misspent, etc. An exception is mis-sell (= to sell wrongly or inappropriately) and its inflections mis-selling and mis-sold, which might be misread without the hyphen.
