For those who do not know, mitomycin finds use as a chemotherapeutic agent by virtue of its antitumour antibiotic activity. Mitomycin is a potent DNA crosslinker. A single crosslink per genome has shown to be effective in killing bacteria. This is accomplished by reductive activation, followed, by two N-alkylations. Because the chemical can cause genetic damage to bacteria, it is possible that mitomycin can also crosslink human DNA, resulting in genetic damage.
