A "mockumentary" is a "mock documentary" -- i.e., a film that is presented as a documentary when in fact it contains fiction. It is believed that this portmanteau was coined by director Rob Reiner in the mid-1980's, when he used it to describe his film This is Spinal Tap. Mockumentary films are often comedic or satiric in nature. They often present themselves as historical movies or follow people through allegedly real events in the style of cinema verite.
