Casablanca, the Movie

Spotlight: "You must remember this, a kiss is still a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh; the fundamental things apply, as time goes by." The song was written by Herman Hupfeld in 1931, for a musical called Everybody's Welcome, and largely forgotten. Writer Murray Burnett incorporated the song into a play he wrote with Joan Alison, Everybody Comes to Rick's. When they couldn't get the play produced, they sold it to Warner Brothers, who passed it on to their scriptwriters, Howard Koch and Julius and Philip Epstein; they turned it into the movie, Casablanca. On this date in 1942, Casablanca premiered in New York. And "As Time Goes By" remains one of the world's most recognized songs.
