The launch of MundoFox was announced on January 23, 2012.[1] Hernan Lopez, president and CEO of Fox International Channels, said the network will cater to "an increasing demand for quality Spanish-language content in the U.S. from both viewers and advertisers."[2] In 2010, there were 50 million Latinos/Hispanics among 309 million residents (16 percent) in the United States; advertising revenue from the Hispanic/Latino market made up $3.6 billion of the $80 billion (4.5 percent) in the total domestic market in 2011.[3] Lopez noted that the Fox network saw "similar dynamics in play" when it launched in 1986 against established English language networks;[2] MundoFox, he added, will seek to replicate Fox's early years when it launches against established Spanish language networks Univision and Telemundo.[4][5]
MundoFox will be a partnership between News Corporation subsidiary Fox International Channels and Colombian private broadcaster RCN Televisión SA (both companies will own 50 percent of the network),[6] and will be headquartered in Los Angeles.[1][2] The network's first president is Emiliano Saccone, who was named to the position in March 2012.[7]
MundoFox is in the process of finalizing affiliation deals with television stations, with a target reach of 75 percent of United States households at the time of its launch.[8] Deals with 20 affiliates reached in early March 2012 include KWHY-TV/Los Angeles (which will serve as the network's flagship station),[9] WJAN-CD/Miami, and KGMC/Fresno;[10] the deals assure MundoFox will be seen in 5 of the top 10 Hispanic markets and cover at least 40 percent of U.S. Hispanic households.[11]
Content for the network will be provided by RCN, Fox International Channels, Fox Deportes, News Corp's Shine Group, RCN's NTN24 and others.[12] Fox International Channels already produces Spanish-language programming and sports for its Latin American and U.S. Hispanic cable channels.[13] RCN is one of the largest producers and exporters of Spanish-language television,[14] and had previously provided content mainly to TeleFutura, Univision's sister network; it stopped committing productions to other U.S. Hispanic networks in anticipation of the MundoFox launch.[2]
MundoFox programming will include two newscasts a day, movies, sports from Fox Deportes and original Fox Telecolombia series. The Shine Group will produce its first Spanish-language content for the network.[8]
