Biography

Myron Selznick was a producer and former head of Selznick Pictures just before that studio's collapse, but he is best remembered as a pioneering talent agent and held under his wing the careers of such stars and directors as Constance Bennett, George Cukor, Alfred Hitchcock, W.C. Fields, Paulette Goddard, Rouben Mamoulian, and Laurence Olivier. Selznick was the brother of David O. Selznick and the son of movie mogul Lewis J. Selznick. Following his drop-out from Columbia University, Selznick went to work in his father's company as a film examiner. He eventually rose through the ranks to become a producer before he was of legal age, making him the youngest producer in Hollywood. By the time he was 21, Selznick had become the chief producer of Selznick Pictures. He was then given the presidency until 1923, when the company folded. Afterward, Selznick made an unsuccessful bid as a freelance producer. He found his true calling by 1928 as an agent. In that capacity, he was instrumental in developing the trend whereby stars produced their own pictures. A powerful force in Tinseltown, he was as hated as he was loved. Selznick died in his mid-forties. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Myron Selznick (October 5, 1898 – March 23, 1944) was an American film producer and talent agent.

Life and career

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of film executive Lewis J. Selznick and brother of renowned producer David O. Selznick. As a young man, Myron Selznick learned the film production business from his father and worked for his father's film company as a production supervisor.

After his father's company closed in 1925, Myron Selznick worked for other studios, primarily as a production adviser. However, with his industry connections, and aided by his brother's rise to one of the most powerful film producers in Hollywood, he saw a business opportunity and set himself up as a talent agent. Partnered with Frank Coleman Joyce, the brother of actress Alice Joyce, they formed Joyce-Selznick, Ltd., the first Los Angeles talent agency. The agency became very successful but personal problems plagued Selznick as a result of severe alcoholism that led to his early death at the age of forty-five in Santa Monica, California.

Selznick owned the thoroughbred racehorse Can't Wait who finished third in the 1938 Kentucky Derby.

Myron Selznick is interred in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
