Naberezhnye Chelny (nəbĭryĕzh'ēə chĭlnē'), city (1989 pop. 501,000), in NE European Russia. Once a small town named Chelny, it became Naberezhnye Chelny in 1930. From 1982 to 1988 the city was named Brezhnev, after Leonid Brezhnev. It is the site of the Kamaz factory, one of the largest heavy-duty truck plants in the world and one of Russia's largest industrial companies and the first large enterprise in Russia to privatize (1990). Power is supplied by the lower Kama River hydroelectrical plant.

Naberezhnye Chelny (Russian: На́бережные Челны́; Tatar Cyrillic: Яр Чаллы, Latin: Yar Çallı; Russian lit. Riverbank Boats, Tatar lit. - Çallı of Riverbank, Çallı means made of stone in Bolgar language) is the second largest city in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. It is the administrative center of Tukayevsky District of Tatarstan.

A major industrial center, Naberezhnye Chelny stands on the Kama River some 225 km east of Kazan. Population: 509,870 (2002 Census);[3] 500,309 (1989 Census).[4]

It is reported to have been founded in 1172. It acquired town status in 1930, and was called Brezhnev (after Leonid Brezhnev) from 1982 to 1988.

Kamaz and ZMA trucks are produced there, and the city is one of the largest planned centers in the world related to vehicle production. With more than two square miles dedicated to production, the Kamaz plant is the largest vehicle factory in the world.

FC KAMAZ Naberezhnye Chelny is a football club based in Naberezhnye Chelny, playing in the Russian First Division.

Alkonost, a Russian doom-folk metal band was formed in Naberezhnye Chelny in 1995.
