Nandyal is a town, mandal and a municipality in Kurnool district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The town has a unique place in India since it is the only Parliamentary constituency which produced a President, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy and a Prime Minister, P.V.Narasimha Rao though both of them were not locals of Nandyal. Narasimha Rao got elected from Nandyal with the highest majority of votes in independent India and perhaps in the world.[citation needed]

Geography

Nandyal is located at 15°′N 78°′E / 15.48, 78.48[1]. It has an average elevation of 203 metres (666 feet).Nandyal lies in the western part of Andhra Pradesh.This region is bounded by thick Nallamala forests.The Telugu Ganga canal and S.R.B.C.Canal flow near Nandyal making the land fertile.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[2], Nandyal had a population of 151,771. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Nandyal has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 55%. In Nandyal, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transportation

  • Nandyal is connected by road from almost all the parts of the state. There are frequent buses from Nandyal to Tirupati, Hyderabad, Kurnool, Adoni, Chittor, Anantapur and Kadapa. Also there are buses plying to parts of Karnataka and TamilNadu like Bellary and Chennai. There is also a bus which directly goes to Tirumala
  • Nandyal has a railway station (code NDL) that is connected to Bangalore, Howrah, Goa, Anantapur, and Hubli. The nearest airport is Hyderabad [5-6 hour drive].
  • Auto rickshaws are a common means of transportation.

Places of interest

  • Nandyal is surrounded by 9 temples of lord Shiva (Called Nava Nandi). Among them, Mahanandhi is famous. One can see a continuous stream of water pouring into an artificial pond. It is believed that this water is so pure that one should travel to the Himalayas to see a place with such pure water in India. The source of water, however, is still a mystery.
  • Ahobilam temple, dedicated to Lord Narasimha is very famous in this region and is situated in a scenic forest which is 2 hour drive from Nandyal.
  • Belum caves is another tourist attraction in this region. A Siva Temple situated at Yaganti near Nandyal. Nandyal has a close Association with Prakasam district due to its proximity with places like Giddalur,Markapur and Dornala.
  • Nandyal is also very well known because of its lentil crops. Nandyal was the native place of Pingali Suranna who was a well known poet in the court of the Vijayanagar Emperor Sri Krishnadeva Rayalu.
  • There is an engineering college established during the reign of P V Narasimha Rao. There are numerous villages surrounding Nandyal town. There is a big lake constructed during Vijayanagar times which serves the water needs of the town. The town is notorious for the poor drainage facilities during the rainy season.

Now there is a medical college for M.B.B.S,B.D.S and three engineering colleges.Among these educational instituitions Medical college and two engineering colleges are found by Mr.santhiram.

There is a well known pipe manufacturing company name Nandi pipes and the founder of this company got elected as M.P(Mr S.P.Y.Reddy) in the year 2004
