Nirbhay Singh Gurjar has been a synonym for terror in the Chambal ravines for more than 30 years, the no-law zone at the cusp of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh that is India’s once and forever Wild West. At 47, Nirbhay — the name means ‘‘fearless’’ — was the last lion of the Chambal

In 40 odd villages in the Chakranagar area of Uttar Pradesh, he was said to run a parallel government and sleep only two hours a day. Mothers use his name to put unruly children to sleep.

Nirbhay Singh Gurjar was the most wanted dacoit of Chambal, India.[1] There was a reward of Rs. 2.5 lakh (approximately US $5,750) on his head.

He was shot dead on November 8, 2005 by police.
