See the U.S. Navy base from a truly unique perspective- from the water. Aboard the ship Victory Rover one can view destroyers, aircraft carriers at the dock. The two- hour tour cruises the Elizabeth River and the Hampton Roads Harbor. The tour leaves from the Nauticus pier, where the battleship U.S.S. Wisconsin is docked. Few tours are as memorable as passing by warships while standing on the deck of a boat.
Mermaids adorn Norfolk throughout the city. Each has been decorated by different artists; creating a truly unique display. Each statue has a different story line page on a plaque - to get the whole story line of each statue, walk the entire path. At the end of the display period, the statues are auctioned off to raise money for Hampton Road's many art organizations.
The Harrison Opera House began its life as a WWII USO theatre. In 1974, Edythe Harrison organized the opera. In 1993 the building underwent extensive renovations to become the magnificent home to the Virginia Opera Company. In recognition to the world of opera and the Commonwealth, the Virginia Opera was named as the Official Opera Company of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Currently, they have four annual full productions, a tremendous feat. Prices vary according to the seats chosen and showtime.
The Botanical Garden features one of the most unique exhibits in the world- a live eagle's nest. A pair of bald eagles built a nest in the garden so cameras were carefully placed, allowing visitors to watch the new family live. Most people will only experience sights like this from film or television. The WOW Children's garden is a three acre adventure park with interactive gardens featuring plants from around the world and a water park to play in.
